Why did Americans endorse a new engagement in international affairs during the Cold War? How did this belief change over time in response to particular events?

    It was because they considered themselves to be the protectors of freedom.

    So as protectors of freedom, they should do something mainly when talking about wars and disputes, which made them go to wars many times to have more allies.
