Why did dictators rise to power in much of Latin America following independence from Portugal and Spain?

The main reason is that the prolonged independence wars produced more military leaders than political leaders amid a weak independent system

The case was different for USA for example which had a strong independent system and a wide range of experienced political leaders after the war. the independent military leaders were also only united by the prospect of defeat by the royal forces.
