Over time, majority-controlled Congresses have allowed various Presidents such as Lincoln and Jackson to expand the powers of the Office of President. Many historians have cited Lincoln as "the closest thing the US has ever had to a dictator.". Many of the original lines drawn by the Constitution have been expanded, changed, or just erased in general, and the powers of the President are no exception.
