The 1959 rebellion in Rwanda led to the killings of Tutsi, while 100,000 fled the country. The Tutsi monarchy was abolished by the referendum in 1961, and in 1962 the country gained independence from Belgium. Years of violent confrontation and killing ensued.

Tensions reached the peak in April 1994, when a plane crash in which the president of Rwanda and Burundi was, triggered what seemed to be an orchestrated attempt by some Hutu leaders to eliminate the Tutsi population. Millions of Rwandan residents, including about three-quarters of the Tutsi population, have been killed.
