Should states have the right to secede from the "Union"? Why or why not?

    In short, no. George Washington's last address to the nation focused on unity. He wanted a united country regardless of future conflict or political changes. If states can secede from the Union, that would mean that there would only be 49 states and en entirely new country. It wouldn't really work, especially within the borders of the country. The Declaration and the Constitution bind us together. It is completely against the law to secede.
