Agriculture allows a civilization or group of people to remain in one place. If you are primarily a hunter-gathering people, then you must relocate and move as the herds and food move. If they are unable to move or find new hunting ground, the people will starve.

Agriculture may, if the ground is fertile, allow a people to grow larger quantities of food than what is naturally available in the wild. Having more food allows the population to grow and decreases instances of disease and sickness.

A drawback to agriculture is that meat provides more protein and calories than can be found in vegetables.

Another drawback to agriculture is that constant farming can destroy the fertility of the land--depleting it of its nutrients.
