    1. Ngo Dinh Diem was a Christian prime minister who presented himself as a Democrat and capitalist as a new ruler of South Vietnam, getting support from the United States and its Western Allies. He had fought the French colonialism with the desire of a free independent South Vietnam based on Western political and economic values. In 1954 he became the prime minister of South Vietnam after a large manipulation by the U. S.

    -Criminal and political opponents especially communists active in the southern province

    -Viet Minh agents and guerrilla soldiers who acted under orders of Hanoi

    -The fight against the French opium trade that encouraged warlords, gangsters and organised crime.
