What factors undermined democracy in post-independence latin america?

There was a huge difference between the wealthy and the poor and the wealthy owned most of the land. They had the military support and could easily enact their will. This is why there was a surge in military dictators in the area and it was a difficult struggle for many of them before a democracy with general suffrage was introduced.
