    The period from 1945 to the early 1970s was an era of unprecedented economic growth, particularly in the United States. By 1975, the US economy represented some 35% of the entire world industrial output, and the US economy was over 3 times larger than that of Japan, the next largest economy.

    One of the areas that most benefitted was automobile manufacturing. The post-World War II era brought many developments, and the industry had few competitors at an international scale. Automobile manufacturing became the largest industry segment in the US, and the largest ever created. By 1960, one-sixth of working Americans were employed directly or indirectly by the industry.
