How and why did President Polk gain control over Texas?

In 1836 the battle of the Alamo happened and then the Texas revolution and Texas gained independence from Mexico, Polk then decided to add the state to the union as a slave state in response to a new free state and that decision started the Mexican american war. (1846-48)
