What led to an increase of immigrants from Ireland to the United States in the mid-1840s

    In the 1840's, Irish immigrants fled to America because of famine in Ireland and England. The potato blight destroyed the main source of food for the Irish. Potato blight is a disease specifically in potatoes that can be harmful to humans if consumed.
