Federalism is the type of government in which power is divided between the national government and other government units such as state and local governments. The government in USA is a federal government.

This type of government have several advantages such as increased citizen participation, dispensing power, protecting from tyranny. There are some disadvantages too, such as protecting segregation and slavery, segregation, and inequalities between states.

The federal form of government is a way to prevent tyranny as the power is divided between state and national government. National government's power is further limited by delegating the power among three branches of the government, it serves as a check and balance and deters the tyranny.
