The war, 1756 - 1963, transformed the British Empire in N. America. The British ministry could no longer let the colonies manage their own affairs. National debt soared from £75 million to £133 million. Interest debt consumed 60% of the national budget and the ministry had to raise taxes as taxes shifted from landowned by the gentry and aristocracy to consumables.
