Assimilation is what enables immegrants to become productive members of society. If they are not familier with the social norms and customs of a country, then they will become either a) less productive or b) become isolated from others and form their own community. The second is occouring in the french-muslim population and could even be argued for the reason why the Charlie Hebdo bombings occoured recently.

Assimilation creates fewer dangers of cultural differences, therefore leading to less conflict.
