India's Ganges River, a vital natural resource, is thought to be seriously contaminated. Why has the government been slow in cleanup efforts?

With other industries on the rise, the government has no motivation to spend the money cleaning the Ganges.

There is strong belief among the Hindu majority that harm cannot come to such a sacred river.

India is underdeveloped and therefore lacks the necessary finances to undertake cleanup efforts.

The government wants to lower population density by encouraging people to move away from the river's banks.
