Could the violence in Kansas have been prevented if Congress had not abandoned the Missouri Compromise? Explain.

Giving Kansas the opportunity to use the concept of popular sovereignty was a huge mistake by the United States Congress. This allowed the citizens of Kansas to vote on whether or not they would be a slave state. This resulted in mass violence and voter fraud. This time period is now known as "Bleeding Kansas."

Even if the Missouri Compromise was not abandoned, Kansas would have most likely had violence. This is due to the fact that the citizens of Kansas were pretty much split down the middle in terms of whether or not they had slavery. The people who did not want slavery would have fought against the institution existing in Kansas. People like John Brown were still around in Kansas and were dedicated to the cause of making Kansas free.
