    It means that why did it resort to conflict if it can be quickly resolved without violence. This quote is from the line of Powhatan tribe chief Wahunsenaca to Captain Smith when he scolded Smith for his bad behavior and his men in resorting violence to get food supplies from the tribes even though they could have just asked kindly without violence.
