Why might the ideals of the enlightenment appeal to the colonists?

    Because they wanted to be independent. The ideals of enlightenment were about people taking power from the monarchs and creating a democratic society. The colonies wanted this because they wanted to become independent from the British crown and a wanted self-governance.
