Depends on what war but ill go with WW2. The United States sough to expanse democratic ideologies in europe but quickly changed when the Soviet started to impose communism in the middle east and eastern europe. So then the U. S wanted to stop the spread of communism while the Soviet tried to expand. But this policy of stopping communism was Containment i believe.
