Generally, public education is administered locally by an elected school committee, which must follow state guidelines, but is otherwise responsible for the local school system. The schools are financed by local taxes and a contribution from the state. A disadvantage of this system is that it is generally not possible to assist to a school that is not covered by the school committee of the place of residence.

In addition to paying teachers and buying textbooks, there are several other expenses that make up public spending on education. Some examples could be:

1 - Finance the building structure of schools and universities.

2 - Create training programs for teachers.

3 - Grant scholarships for students with financial difficulties, or with outstanding academic abilities.

4 - Financing the student transportation system, as well as the repair or acquisition of new vehicles for this purpose.

5 - Financing of research and technical developments applicable to the daily routine of the country's schools and universities.
