    Senator Eugene McCarthy was an American politician who opposed the Vietnam War. In the year 1964, McCarthy voted in favor of the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, which granted the authorization to president Lyndon Johnson to engage in military Conflict with Vietnam. However, he was not in concordance with any of the further actions taken by the president regarding the war. Although his peace platform was not successful, the US proceeded with the war, his efforts were decisive in the withdrawal of President Johnson for reelection. As the Democratic Party was divided regarding the actions that were being taken in the war.
