    After the Tonkin Gulf incident in 1964, Johnson convinced the US Congress to pass the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. This law allowed the president to use US troops however he saw fit, as long as it was used as a means to protect America's safety. After this law is passed, hundreds of thousands of American soldiers would be sent into the Vietnam War.
