Florida statehood was dependent on which state being admitted as a free state?

    Iowa--under the principles of the Missouri Compromise a free and slave state had to enter the union at the same time.

    Initially there was thought of splitting Florida making one part free and the other slave, but ultimately it was decided Florida would enter the Union as one state and it would be a slave state. Iowa joined in 1846 as a free state.
