Vasco Nunez de Balboa was the first European to see the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean in 1513. He was a Spanish governor and a explorer best known for having crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the West Coast. He embarked in 1500 together with Rodrigo de Bastidas, who had license to bring treasure for the Queen and King from the New World after Christopher Columbus's journeys.
