People in the nineteenth century US believed that it was their destiny to expand westward up to the Pacific Ocean, it came to be known as Manifest Destiny. John O'Sullivan is credited with coining this term in 1845. It was used by the Democrats to justify war with Mexico, acquisition of Oregon territory, New mexico and California. It became an important force in US foreign policy when it went to war with Spain and annexed Hawaii in 1890's.
