Parens Patriae is a juvenile justice legal system that grants the state rights to serve as a guardian for children, the elderly, mentally ill, or the disabled. The idea is that these types of individuals cannot take care of themselves, so if no one else can be their guardian, it is the responsibility of the government to assume that role.
