    There would have been anarchy had it been that Samuel Tilden won the election and refused to compromise.

    Explanation:

    This is because, the Federal troops at the Southern States carrying out Reconstruction policy would have been removed and the disenfranchisement of black voters and African Americans would have been extended to other States in America.

    This would have gone a long way to remove the gains of Abraham Lincoln who tried to unite the country after the Civil War.
