Why was education important for former slaves?

    Education is important for former slaves because it fostered their integration into main stream society.

    The slaves were practically babies and they had never received education before. Only a very small percentage new how to read or write. They were slaves. Slave owners disliked giving slaves the power of knowledge because that could lead to organized revolts.
