The circumstance that was most notably responsible for creating a trans-Atlantic economy during the early modern era was the fact that Europeans had inventions like the magnetic compass. This allowed early European colonies to establish themselves on what is now American soil. These new empires formed trade agreements with the Europeans and the Portuguese which went on to create the slave settlements in Western Africa.
