What was the purpose of the crusades

The Christians wanted to take back Jerusalem (The Holy Land) from the Muslims. Christians wanted Jerusalem because that's where Jesus spent most of his life and that's where he was crucified. But the Muslims wanted the city because they also had religious reasons.
