What was the effect of the decline in jobs in industrial manufacturing?

    Another argument put forward to explain manufacturing's decline is fast rates of productivity growth in the manufacturing sector relative to other sectors in the economy. All else equal, rapid productivity growth in manufacturing implies that fewer workers are needed to produce a given amount of output.
