I do not believe that the Spartan system of discipline would work in our schools, for several reasons. In Sparta, children were trained to be warriors. This training was often brutal and harsh. They were taken away from their families, fed little food, and pushed to their limits in various different ways. Moreover, older children were often allowed to punish younger ones.

This system would not work in our schools because we now understand that children's development is quite complex, and that they require a certain level of kindness and safety to develop properly. Moreover, our society values very different things when compared to Spartan society. Therefore, a child who is very violent would not be admired nowadays. Finally, we also have laws now that protect children from abuse, especially in school.
