Why did many Americans, including U. S. Minister John L. Stevens, support the annexation of Hawaii?

    In the late 1800's, sugar was the chief export of Hawaii, and American expatriate farmers were the dominant producers of this lucrative good. However, in 1890, the McKinley Tariff was put into place, which raised tax rates on imported sugar, including that from Hawaii. As such, the farmers had an incentive to support annexation, which would remove the tariff.
