The Inca innovated in several ways because they inhabited the Andean Cordillera, a very steep chain of Mountains in South America.

For example, for cultivating crops in the steep mountains, the Inca developed terraces. These terrances were carved out in the mountain, and provided a small flat space where crops could be more easily cultivated.
