During the First Arab-Israeli War of 1948, more that 700,000 Arab Palestinians fled their homes and villages because of the armed conflict between Israelis and the forces of several Arab countries that had rejected the creation of Israel and attacked Israel. Several hundred Palestinian villages were sacked or destroyed.

Fearing reprisals or being killed, the Palestinians went to neighboring countries to live in refugee camps. The Palestinian people call this event the "Nakba" or "catastrophe."
