Immigrants prior to this time usually gained entrance to America through indentured servitude, in which they would work to pay of their debt to the people that paid for their voyage. Immigrants during 1870-1910 tended to enter America in any way they could, not in indentured servitude. This could mean working on a voyage or boarding as cargo. Both came to make better lives, but both came from different political climates and different backgrounds.
