How did American farmers respond to new challenges in the mid to late 1800s

    Farmers were losing their farms because they could not repay their mortgages. Farmers were being charged very high interest rates on loans. Farmers were paying more to ship products on the railroads than other businesses were. The prices of crops were very low.
