Before Napoleon and his troops take over Russian territory, the Russians would burn what they leave behind. This meant that French troops would find no loot for supplies and starve in the Russian winter. When Napoleon took over Moscow, Russian burned Moscow to force Napoleon's army to out of Moscow. The combination of low supplies and harsh winter weather led to the death of over 500,000 French troops. This would lead to Napoleon's exile to Elba.
