    Great Depression - The Republican government of Herbert Hoover had remained firm on its principle of non-intervention in the economy. However, the election of Franklin Roosevelt changed this. Roosevelt believed that the federal government must concern itself with the people's economic well-being. This saw introduction of New Deal programs aimed at regulating different sectors responsible for the Great Depression. These programs ultimately led to the expansion of the Federal government.
