The Lord Proprietors were eight englishmen that had numerous charters for for the colonies. The King would give the Lord Proprietors this charter, and it would make a colony a "royal colony", meaning the noblemen could control the state. Controlling the state meant that they could declare war, regulate trade, collect the taxes, and other important things. North and South Carolina, known as just "Carolina" in the olden times, was a royal colony. It was easy to grow tobacco because of the weather conditions, which the Lord Proprietors loved it, as it meant more money. The King gave the Lord Proprietors this privilege as a gift, as they had been loyal to him while King Charles II was trying to regain his throne.
