How did the role of merchants change under han rule?

    Han valued the a poor smallholder or agricultural labourer of low social status and respected them for their hard labor. Merchants didn't do much so they had to pay the consequences. Poor smallholder or agricultural labourerwere honored for their productive labors while merchants were subject to a range of controls.
