Indra Ghandi was assassinated by a member of her bodyguard because of her role in Operation Blue Star and the attack on the Golden Temple, Sikhism most holy site.

Since the creation of India, the local Sikh population were a minority in the Punjab region. With a sizable population of 20 million, many had called for an independent homeland based on their faith, just as Pakistan was made for majority Muslims and India for majority Hindus.

While, for most of the country's history the call was rejected, the movement started to become more vocal. When Indian authorities tried to silent them, the movement became violent.

Eventually, the Indian Army attacked Sikhism's most holy site where many so-called terrorists were hiding.

It resulted in the deaths of hundreds of worshipers and the temple being destroyed.

In response, Indra Ghandi's Sikh bodyguards opened fire on her in revenge for this.
