When and why did russia look east for expansion?

    They looked at it in 19th and 20th century. They wanted to reach the Pacific ocean because they wanted to get warm water ports where they could build ports used for trading with ships. This expansion was one of the reasons why Russia had a war with Japan at the time regarding borders and expansion towards China
