One idea proposed during the Enlightenment was that people should have the right to worship as they choose. This meant that their should be separation of church and state and that people should be allowed to be as religious as they wanted to be. Other ideas prominent during that time was that government should not retain absolute power, but that people needed the guarantee of being protected by the government. The idea of monarchy through hereditary means was also questioned, as people wanted to move towards democracy and elections.
