    The Safavid Empire, now day Iran, was governed by Shi'ah Muslims. The empire began as a group of Sufi Muslims and began to grow gradually because of political marriages, Ali, and the 'hidden Imam'. When the group of people was big enough to consider themselves a country, they broke off from the Ottoman Empire and strengthened their military after their independence. Many prosecuted Ottoman soldiers moved into the Safavid Empire for refuge
