The purpose of John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry was the establishment of a stronghold for freed slaves. John Brown was an ardent abolitionist, who dedicated himself to destroying slavery and inciting insurrection. His attack on Harper's Ferry was unsuccessful. He was captured, charged with treason, and executed on December 2, 1859. Two of his sons were killed during the raid itself. The raid on Harper's Ferry was, however, successful in one way. It further severed relations between the North and South and directly affected the presidential election of 1860.
