    Upon inauguration of President Lyndon Johnson in the year 1964, he had a large majority of democrats in Congress. Johnson had taken over after the assassination of president Kennedy a year earlier. Because he won by big margin, he was able to pass the legislation which he used to achieve reforms. He ran against Barry Wielder in the this election.
