Slavery was widespread in Africa just like in various parts of the world. But the slaves in Africa were not treated as chattel slaves, they had some rights similar to the indentured servants. While in Europe they were treated as a personal property and were bought and sold as commodities.

Slavery in Africa had differed forms such a as enslaving the captives, criminal slavery and military slavery. Slavery was also practised to fulfil their needs for court and domestic purposes. Plantation slavery was practised in parts of west Africa and eastern coast of Africa. Domestic slavery increased during 19th century when Atlantic slave trade was abolished.
