    John Ross encouraged the Cherokee people to embrace the Anglo-American Culture and Religion. The Cherokee were among five major tribes of the south and applied diplomacy and legal arguments to protect their interests. He oversaw the building of schools and petitioned the federal government to pay the people $5 Million it owed them.
