    Answer: Propaganda

The Cultural Revolution was a social and political movement in China from 1966 to 1976 initiated by Mao Zedong, chairman of the Communist Party of China. Its purpose was to spread the communist ideology in the country by removing elements of capitalism or traditional Chinese society.

During this period, Mao's personality cult grew enormously. Propaganda was widespread and it was the main way in which the government was able to influence its citizens. Millions of people were persecuted and suffered forced labor, torture, imprisonment and sometimes execution. Large segments of the population were displaced and many elements of Chinese culture destroyed.
